Unconfirmed and dubious records

This includes species which have been recorded in published lists which have either subsequently been redetermined, or there is no voucher material and the authors have serious doubts regarding their identification or synonymy. Further research and surveys may, in the future, prove these species to be Staffordshire residents, but they are not currently accepted on to the full list.

Species marked ± were included on the 1987 checklist produced by David Emley.

± Ancistrocerus scoticus (synonymy problem)

One 1896 Masefield record and two pre-1903 Jourdain records as Odynerus trimarginatus subsequently synonymised as A.albotricinctus by Daltry in his 1939 checklist, these could in fact refer to A.trifasciatus.

± Andrena flavipes (unconfirmed)

One pre-1863 record in the Natural History of Tutbury cannot be included on the list.

Andrena nana (redetermined as A.coitana)

One 1948 specimen in the Daltry collection - redetermined by JR Webb as A.coitana. Also records from Carr (pre-1931) and Masefield (1903) cannot be accepted at this juncture.

Colletes cunicularis (redetermined)

One 1896 Masefield record included in both Jourdain's (1903) and Daltry's (1939) checklists was subsequently corrected by Daltry in TNSFC (1948) stating "This must be an error in determination as it is ... a coastal species ...".

Crossocerus vagabundus (unconfirmed)

One pre-1931 record from LA Carr as Crabro vagabundus cannot be included on the list.

Didineis lunicornis (redetermined as Nysson dimidiatus)

Reported in Daltry's checklist of 1950, but subsequently redetermined by Daltry in 1955.

± Eucera longicornis (unconfirmed)

One pre-1863 record in the Natural History of Tutbury, together with the Cannock Chase record cannot be included on the list.

Evagetes pectinipes (unconfirmed)

One 1979 record for Hopwas cannot be included without a voucher specimen.

Formica sanguinea (unconfirmed)

A 1974 Dudley record cannot be accepted without a voucher specimen.

Halictus confusus (unconfirmed/redetermined)

There are six records for H.confusus all from Daltry, including an entry in his 1939 checklist. However, the only specimen from the Daltry collection checked by the authors was found to be H.tumulorum, hence this species has been omitted from the checklist pending further research. S.Falk has an unconfirmed record for 2001, but until this is verified, Halictus confusus remains here.

Halictus eurygnathus (unconfirmed)

A single 1986 record as H.quadricinctus from Mill Green, Cannock cannot be accepted without a voucher specimen.

± Lasioglossum malachurum (unconfirmed)

One pre-1863 record as Halictus longulus in the Natural History of Tutbury cannot be included on the list.

± Lasius alienus (unconfirmed/redetermined)

An early record by Daltry was subsequently redetermined as Lasius niger, while records from the Stoke-on-Trent Environmental Survey have been redetermined as Formica lemani.

Megachile leachella (unconfirmed)

One pre-1984 record from Stoke-on-Trent cannot be accepted without a voucher specimen.

Mellinus crabroneus (unconfirmed)

One pre-1931 record from LA Carr as M.sabulosus, together with the Cannock Chase record cannot be included on the list.

± Mimesa bicolor (redetermined as P.lutarius)

Originally mentioned in the previous checklist by Emley (1987), a specimen was found in the Potteries Museum collection and redetermined as Psen (Mimesa) lutarius. This species has thus been removed from the list.

Nomada hirtipes (unconfirmed)

Recorded by Daltry in TNSFC 1945 and determined by H.Britten, but in TNSFC (1955) Daltry states "... hardly likely to be found in Staffordshire. The three specimens in question are probably only one of the common closely allied species." The voucher specimen for this record needs to be located and checked if possible.

Panurgus calcaratus (unconfirmed)

A single 1986 record of H.quadricinctus from Mill Green, Cannock cannot be accepted without a voucher specimen.

Priocnemis hyalinata (redetermined as P.parvula)

One 1948 specimen of Priocnemis femoratus (an old synonym for P.hyalinatus) in the Daltry collection - redetermined by JR Webb as P.parvula.

Passaloecus singularis (unconfirmed)

Recorded both in the north of the county and on Cannock Chase, but both records from the same source cannot be included on the list.

± Symmorphus crassicornis (redetermined as S.sinuatissimus)

Recorded by Daltry in TNSFC (1937) and subsequently corrected, also by Daltry, in TNSFC (1955).

A collection of unconfirmed records from a variety of sources regarding locations in the north of the county and Cannock Chase have been received. There are no supporting voucher specimens for these species, therefore until further supporting evidence is forthcoming these species have been omitted from the main list and appear here (species marked * additionally have their own entry above):

±Andrena simillima Nomada sexfasciata
 Crossocerus distinguendus Oxybelus mandibularis
 Diodontus luperus Passaloecus singularis*
 Ectemnius ruficornis Sphecodes longulus
 Ectemnius sexcinctus Sphecodes spinulosus
±Eucera longicornis* Spilomena beata
 Lasioglossum pauxillum Vespula austriaca
 Mellinus crabroneus*
