Minutes of the 7th meeting of SIG held at 7.30
p.m. 12th February 2001 at Coutts House (confirmed)

1) Minutes of the previous meeting
were presented and accepted as a true record of events
2) Matters arrising from the previous minutes
-
A visit by JW has been arranged at the end of February 2001
to the Daltry Collection and a list of the number of specimens has been
provided by its curator Steve Lane
-
CS has yet to be reimbursed. A situation that is now urgent,
and which will be helped by the return of the origional SIG passbook.
3) Cotton Dell:
-
The molluscan survey data from RG has been incorporated into
the records for the site (Thanks tabled).

There was concern that the entrance, to the uninformed, was
difficult to find and DS was asked to look into ways of clarrifying this
situation so that an ammended map could be posted to the members.

HOT SPOT date set for
Sunday 20th of May 2001.
Members of the SIG Committee will be on site for most of the day but there
is designated meeting time of 1.30 pm in the County Council Car Park Oakamoor.

An interim report on the site is to be drafted and sent to
members prior to the HOT SPOT event (HB to organise)
4) SIG involvement in invertebrate issues since the last
meeting
-
MW has been recording from sandy places around Cheadle focussing
mainly on tussocks. Amongst several intersting finds he highlighted Tachinus
colaris as being an under-recorded species from Staffordshire last
recorded by Fowler

TB has been in contact with Alton branch of the SWT as regards
a guided walk looking at Odonata
-
JW has been invoved in the production of a video of the Bee-Wolf
(Philanthus triangulum) for the Really Wild Show (BBC Bristol) as
well as producing the BAP report for Cannock Chase.

Other members of the committee were involved in determination
of specimens collected over the last season
5) Record Compilers Report:
Due to the absence of CS from the meeting a report was
presented on behalf of CS by JW. Briefly the records show that the totals
for invertebrates now 73,895 records of 5,323 species with the majority
coming from Diptera, Lepidoptera and Coleoptera. CS also notes that the
data for Cotton Dell has yet to be entered into the SIG Recorder database.
Information of records to be sent out to members with a copy of these minutes.
6) Sites to be aware of in the coming season:

MW again suggested the Dove between Mappleton and Rocester.
This has a useable footpath on the Staffordshire side if the River Dove.
He also promoted a visit to the meadows below Uttoxeter.

TB and MW suggested a visit (wiith them) to Mobberley sandstone
quarry. This is a highly significant site on Private land which requires
some negotiation to enter.
7) Potteries Green Fair March 23rd 2001 City
Museum Hanley:
-
DS has volunteered to run a stand for SIG at this event but
asked members to provide him with visually interesting material for the
day
8) Invertebrate Conservation Trust March 31st
2001 Peterborough Central Library:
-
DS to attend as a representative of SIG.
9) AOB:
-
TB presented sighting records for the Red Veined Darter (Sympetrum
fonscolombei) and a possible sighting of the Southern Migrant Hawker
(Aeshna mixta) at Chartley Moss
-
Evidence for the use of Pheromone traps for clearwing moths
was presented
-
The revised Moths of Staffordshire (Ed D Emley) is hoped
to be published in 2001 if funds are available
-
Committee positions are up for renewal at the end of 2001
and members were asked to consider taking on the roles of Chair, Secretary,
Site Co-ordinator.
