The Checklist of Lepidoptera Recorded from the British Isles by JD Bradley is the authoratative list containing all the most up-to-date scientific names and all their synonyms.
In that list the authors assign a checklist number to each species. Even if the species' name changes the checklist code remains the same. Such a code has great benefits when it comes to transferring records to and from recorders and recording schemes. As long as the code number is included, it doesn't matter if an old name is used or if a name is misspelt.
